At first I thought that the problem with this movie was simply the uneven mix of hardship against success story.
But now I think it's a problem common to documentary - when it focuses on human interest to the exclusion of the topic(which this movie did), it comes off as a caricature of the real thing. Intentionally or not, IGTM borders on being reality TV, albeit with more prestigious aesthetics.
I haven't seen the film (not that that's a prerequisite for reading a review) but I think your review is great. It might be the best thing I've read on the topic of IGTM.
